Agenda Cover

                           Agenda Cover

To do first:
-View actual examples of agenda covers from over the years at Lincoln, and those from other school.
-Research designs online.
-Create 10 sketches for the agenda design.  These designs should be icon/image and font based.  Include The Lincoln High School and the year at minimum.  You can also include quotes, images and designs.  The sketches should be basic, mostly showing the placement or layout of important design elements.
-The design can be based on Lincoln, Lincoln High School or visually exciting design.  Design something you would want to use.
-Create a folder for the project and in it 2 more folders, one for fonts and one for images.  Start collecting content for these folders for you to use later.
-Keep the 10% rule or use original photographs or drawing for your work.
-Be clever and think out of the box and off of the line.

Programs and Layout

Your agenda design is a tool that students can with them throughout the day.  What would be cool or interesting to you and your classmates?
Use Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or both.
Dimensions: 5” wide & 8” tall
Use guidelines to create a ¼” extra space.  The area within the guideline will fit the cover.  The purpose of the “bleed area” is to accommodate the rounded corners of the agenda cover.
This is a full color design.
It should have layers to create depth.  Find texture and paint brushes online to create visual interest.

Design dimensions are as follows:
·         300 dot resolution (155 lines)
·         5” x 8” (pull in margins)

Monday

Let the photoshop experience flow!

We use Photoshop differently in Graphics then the Digital Photography students do.  We are interested in cool effects that can be applied to letter forms.  Over the next couple of weeks, we will work on becoming familiar (more familiar for some) with the ins and outs of Photoshop from a Graphic Design perspective.  We will also learn how to find, load and use brushes.  We will even learn how to manipulate the brushes and their product.

Upcoming projects:

1. Program of Studies for the web
2. 2013-2014 Agenda Cover
3. Website Design

Other Projects:
1. State Park Sticker
2. Jerry Marshall Program

We will be talking about the about the State Cross Country Logo next.  Again, you have a real client. Copyright laws must be observed as these designs will be sold to the public!  There are 3 cash prizes for this project of $50, $25 and $15 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place designs.

Wednesday

We are having a critique today.

Please copy your typographic/icon logo into the temporary type/icon logo folder in the N drive.  This is great chance to see your work from a different perspective.  We will be looking at readability, arrangement and color impact.  You will get a grade for this, so make sure your work is in the folder. Don't panic! It does not need to be finished!

Take notes on the recommendations.  They can be worked on Thursday, when I am on The Hartman Creek field trip.

We will be wrapping this assignment up soon.  The next assignment is 10 sketches for the Program of Studies that Mrs. Hoch introduced yesterday.  They will be due next week.

I am caught up on grades, so I will be trouble shooting the couple of tutorial questions emailed to me, tonight.

One last thing...is anyone familiar with iCloud5?  Someone looking for help with it.  Let me know if you can help out.

Friday, October 11, 2013

Friday

Today is a great day to catch up!

Things to consider working on:
-Illustrator version of your best icon/typography design from this week.  Find tutorials that will help you create the most awesome version of this logo possible.
-Finish up missing assignments.  Email me the Illustrator file (.ai) so I can grade it at home this weekend.
-Work on a personal project
-Check out the contest tab and see if anything appeals to you.

Please stay off youtube unless it is a tutorial for your logo.

Thank you for your hard work!

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

Tuesday

One more day...
Finish up the sketches and turn them in so I can grade them.

If you feel strongly about a couple of them, start working in Illustrator.

Monday

We are starting our final logo design project.

This videos will help get you started.

I shared your assignment with you as a Google Doc.

Monday, September 30, 2013

Monday

This is a shortened day, so be prepared for classes to end at different time than normal.

Today we will be searching for Adobe Illustrator tutorials that will show you how to create a drawing of an icon or image.

The following links are collections that you can search for possible tutorials.

Option #1

Option #2

Option #3

or try typing in "adobe illustrator cs6 image drawing tutorials" into a Google search and find your own tutorial.

Your goal is to find a tutorial which will help you learn drawing techniques using Illustrator.  Do not choose a complicated image as we will be applying what we learn to an icon of our own design that will be used to eventually create a type and icon logo.

Options 1-3 are collections of illustrator drawing tutorials, but are not what I am expecting you to choose from.  Choose something that you can use.

When you start your drawing exercise tutorial, please paste the tutorial web address on a layer of it's own.

-Each folder will have 4 documents in it to be graded.

Let me know if you need help!

What if you are finished?  This is a great change to start a side project.  Do you belong to club that wants t-shirt?  Work on design.  Do you want try out some other tools to see how they work?  Try them out.  Check out the tab for

Why collaging?

How do you use transfer techniques?

Thursday, September 5, 2013

Beginning Logo Design

We are going to be moving into our first design problem.  As we do this we need to understand more about typography and logos.

Typography

Logo Design

Types of Logos

Graphic History of Typography

Flashback!

Designing a Typographic Logo:

-Think back to what we talked about last week regarding brainstorming.
-Think about what the chapter reading described as methods of recording brainstormed ideas.
-Finally, your logo should have 3 characteristics:
1. Easily Recognized
2. Visual Meaning
3. Memorable

Your next assignment:
You will be sketching 50 designs based on the idea of a Topographic Logo for your graphic design company.  5 or more of these designs will use the collage or transfer techniques along with sketching.  Which we will talk about more next week.  These sketches will be due next early next week.

Guided Reading...due Monday due to network issues!!!  If you cannot read online, ask me for the book.  It can be checked out for the weekend.

Thursday, May 23, 2013

Happy Thursday!

Alright,

Having size issues with your wiggle?  Check your resolution.  Set it at 72 dpi.

How large is your image?  Set it for 11" or less.

Something neat to look into.... WE have done some of this through photoshop and using
texture application and displacement layers.

WE ARE going to hit something up today quick...
It is a pretty neat feature and something we may need to create into a full blown project:
Just an Effect.

It kind of goes like this....HDR effect

This is a series of 5 images that I took at Hartman.  I adjusted the exposure with 2 images

under exposed and 2 over exposed. The middle image looks like this...

After adjusting the photo using merge to HDR Pro, the image looks like this...

Try it out using my pictures or yours.  It's lots of fun!  Turn in what you come up
with into the HDR folding in the 'N' Drive.

Friday!

Digital Painting Reminders:

-Copy your original image and hide it.

-paint on a new layer either above your copy or below it. (if you are using the photocopy method, remember to delete the white in the photocopy layer if you are painting under that layer)

-make new layers as you change colors or as it makes sense to.  This makes it easier to edit your work.

-merging layers is not requires, but if you merge layers only do so once you are 100% confident you will not need to edit anything.

-try different brushes to get different effects

-create light, medium and dark values of colors

-THINK about the impressionist painters.  THINK about the light.

Thursday, May 9, 2013

Wednesday!

We are going to look at a few different ways to start with a painting composition.

Sketch Filters from our filter gallery assist in outlining the objects in our photograph.

Fill/Adjustment Layers also help in finding a photo filter/fill layer to assist in giving our
paintings an undertone.
- warm/cool/etc
Burn/Dodge on paint to highlight/darken without changing color
(utilizing tints/shades)

And now...we work.

1. Fine Art Trio/Rubric done and saved in N-drive with name and, also, printed!

2. Hartman Creek Contact sheets/rubric handed in

3. Begin Digital Painting.... chose to use a photocopy filter &/or warming/cooling
photo-filter or opt to use a transparent layer.  Either way all work needs to be done
on a separate layer: not on the background/filter layer.... PAY ATTENTION to your
layer window.

Need help: LET ME KNOW.

Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Tuesday

Preview of painting

Monday!

Alright everyone.... moving into the digital painting.

Today we talk about...

Painting.  Color.... Influence of the impressionists.

Impressionists were rebels at their time.... And we will also rebel.

Impressionists....

Mary Cassatt

Edgar Degas

Pierre Renoir

Claude Monet

Memory Cards?

I hope so!  Contact sheets from Friday need to be printed, annotated and evaluated asap!

Threshold...

What's Threshold?
It is the reduction of a photo to straight black and white.  As the artist you can change

the balance of black to white in your composition.  We will be manipulating the contrast
balance and adding color as we go.

Steps.
1. copy bkgrd
2. image-adjustments-threshold
3. magic wand- select white/select similar/delete
4. select inverse
5. begin color scheme: what are you looking for with color in the image?
6. paintbrush/color/ ctrl D= deselect
7. repeat

This is great intro to digital painting.  Choose an image from your Hartman Creek shoot
for this piece.  Choose a color scheme that creates the mood you would like to convey
with this piece.  Cool colors are quiet and melancholy, while warm colors are exciting
and cheerful.

Fine Art Canvases...
this should definitely work in a series...
minimum of 3 canvases working as a series piece created of only textures/brushes
with the use of color/composition/variety/repetition... MAKE IT GREAT.

Rubric will be in the N-drive and we will follow the same kind of routine.
