Portraits...the assignment

Portraiture!

There are only two styles of portrait painting; the serious
and the smirk.
Charles Dickens

Self Portrait:   a representation of an artist, drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by the artist.

Portraiture:  the creation of any portrait, an artistic representation of a person

Now... some that we can also begin to work with...

LEVITATION!

This is how it will be done!!

This is how it can look....

How can we make this better?!

Goals with this project:

24 images to work with... multiple shots, variety in images... what can we work with, how do we
want the composition to look?  What are we trying to define of ourselves or the person?

Are you creating a series?
DO you plan to create a complex composite portrait in the tradition of Brooke Shaden or Martin de Pasquale?
List what would make this GREAT!!
What do I need to have images of?
Where do I need to go for your location?
What will it take to make this happen?

Are you working in any levitation: TRIPOD IS A MUST.

Critiques Day

This will be a 2 part process...

Part 1
-You will need a piece of paper. On the paper, you will be writing down an assigned number, and one question that you you want answered.

-Be sure that the image being critiqued is up on your screen. If you have more than one, have 2 pieces of paper and both images available to view.

-Each person will find the people in the room with the same number as yourself. You will answer the question posed by the artist. You will also comment about how the piece could be improved or approached. You will write your name next to your comments. Your comments will be graded. Answers like "it is nice" or "I would not change anything" are worth 0 points.

Part 2
-you will look over your paper, and share with the class your ideas about your piece on the screen. You will also share one of the comments from your paper that you thought was helpful.

-You will hand in the paper with the comments. Be sure your name is clearly written at the top of the page.

Photomontage

Students will be studying the  Photography of Jerry Uelsmann.  I will be showing a video in class of his work.  Feel free to check out his work at the link below. Mr. Uelsmann's  work is based on combining images to create surrealist photos based on dreams and other communications such as transformation, birth, and tranquility. All of his work is shot with film and completed in a traditional darkroom.  He does use the figure(nude) in his work quite often.  We will be using photoshop to create our own surrealistic final.

Learning Targets:

  • Students will learn/demonstrate smooth blends and transition using Photoshop blend tools.
  • Students will learn/demonstrate how to communicate through the visual arts using the rules of composition.
  • Students will learn/demonstrate how to use Photoshop tools to develop and later flatten layers.

Assignment:
Students will create 1-3 final images using the style of Jerry Uelsmann to communicate a concept, perception, or dream.

Preparation:
The first decision you will have to make is "What do I want to communicate?" It is hard to make a final artwork and not have an idea of what you want it to look like so I would like you to create 2 to 3 thumb nail sketches and articulate what you want the final work to say. Start with the Photo shooting list images, and developing your ideas on paper.   If you need more images, remember to shoot objects on plain black , white or any other color background that creates a contrast between the object and it.
