Composition

We will be looking at Composition today. As we move on to the final portrait, how do we want that portrait to look? What would make it interesting or dynamic?

Geometric Side View Portrait

All tutorials should be complete and in the N Drive for grading.

Use the first 15 minutes of class to work on your front view portrait. Try the following tasks:

  • copy a layer and delete information from each layer to create 2 completely different layers. Add labels as needed.
  • Add color to your potrait using the color picker.
  • Create a color swatch on the desktop, and use the eyedropper to add that color somewhere in your portrait
  • Create texture and layers in the hair.
Finally we will complete the setup for the geometric portrait, and get started on it. Line work will be first. This will be followed by color.

Front View Portrait

Use the first half of class to keep practicing the pen tool. Once you feel you have a good handle on the techniques, then you can turn in your practice templates into the turn-in folder in the N-Drive.

Quick hint: Several people were struggling with stopping the draing of the shape, adjusting, and restarting the shape. Try drawing the shape. Hit enter or esc to end the line. Next click one of the end anchors (beginning or end). It will show a minus next to the pen tool, but it will not delete this point (or it shouldn't delete it :P) Continue to complete the shape. This is tricky to master. Another way is to complete the shape, and go back after with the white arrow to tidy the shape up. Misty can get me on messenger if there are simple questions during class.

Open your Practice Portrait. This is the front view Portrait. Look back at the portrait I posted on the first day of class. Think about which facial features you would like to trace. Use a color that stands out against the portrait, so you can see it easily. Remeber to look at the layers panel. Did you select the tracing layer? If not, select it, and begin tracing the features. Try different methods for the eyebrows, and hair. See what you like best. You can play with stroke weigh too. On Monday we will look at your progress, and start talking about color.
