Happy "Friday"

Today is Raider Pride Day!

History Menu & Brush
Using the history brush with the history window allows you to selectively return portions of your image back to the state of the image you selected in the history menu.  Got it?  No?  That's why we will practice it in class.  Using this technique to add blurring to your image in the background helps minimize distracting things from your piece and keeps the viewers focus on the main subject.

Portraiture
Complete your portrait shots over break.  24 exposures are the minimum required.
Think about composition, subject, costumes, make-up, settings you may want to add.
This could be a series, it could be a single image created from multiple images or it could be playing with levitation.

The Hartman Creek field trip will take place the 2nd or 3rd week of April.

Have a great break!  See you in April :)

Portraiture!

There are only two styles of portrait painting; the serious
and the smirk.
Charles Dickens

Self Portrait:   a representation of an artist, drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by the artist.

Portraiture:  the creation of any portrait, an artistic representation of a person

Some images done prior: Portraiture Power Point!
And who doesn't love power points!

Now... some that we can also begin to work with...
LEVITATION!

This is how it will be done!!

This is how it can look....

How can we make this better?!

Goals with this project:
24 images to work with... multiple shots, variety in images... what can we work with, how do we
want the composition to look?  what are we trying to define of ourselves or the person?
List what would make this GREAT!!
What do I need to have images of?
Where do I need to go?
What will it take to make this happen?

Tuesday!

The wonderful world of color...
We are going to look at adding color to a black and white photo.  This was often done by photo studios before color film was invented.
We will learn how to use a layer group to allow multiple layers to be added to a project with the same blending mode applied to it automatically.
We will also make selection and copy that layer so that it can be added to our layer group.

Keep working on
-Restorations and alteration...they will be graded next week
-Tutorials...eye and hair will be graded this week, and vintage and retro will be graded next week.

Coming up
-Portraiture

And the Winners Are...

Everyone's work turnout great!  These are the favorite ones.
Next:
We move into Restoration Work.

The restoration to begin with is found in the N-drive under the restoration folder.
This is an image for us all to begin on.
You are expected to be bring in photos to be scanned in ASAP.

1st step is to restore the image on it's black/white (or possibly colored) platform.
2nd step is to enhance the image and provide a fun color palette to the photograph.
The final for this assignment will consist of two images: original  and the restored or altered color image.

Our next Project is in need of another contact sheet Photo-Session.
It will pertain to a self-portrait.
This will be discussed next week.

It's Friday and supper sunny!

Remember to look at the mutants, choose your favorite, and create a comment under yesterday's post.  You can use a gmail account or anonymous.  Make sure you identify your self in your post.  Is it graded...YES!

Bring in your photo(s) for restoration on Monday.

Finish up loose ends today!  Progress report will be printed on Monday.

PTV night is on Tuesday.  I will be in room 115 if your parent would like to see me.

The Mutants are Coming!

There are some great mutants and stories in the N Drive.  Your assignment is to look at the mutants (and read the stories, if you have time).  Pick your favorite.  Post a comment on today's post about your choice that explains why you chose this mutant.  Be thoughtful and constructive.   Saying it is cute or scary is not a great way to explain your choice.  Think about things like the rule of 3rds or S curves for balance.  Contrast or texture.  Blending or color. Include your name in your post if it is not obvious that it is you.  If you cannot post through a gmail account, it is ok to post under anonymous with identification.  Last note...use proper online etiquette (netiquette).  Inappropriate comments will result in a zero for this assignment.  This should be completely by the end of class on Friday.

2 more days to get caught up before progress reports are published!

Remember to bring in your photos for restoration!

No More Snow!  Just saying...

Grades are looking better across the board.  There are still people needing to get assignment completed.  It's not too late.

Keep working on you photomontage.
If you have school appropriate side projects, that is great!  Just keep up with your main assignments.

Start bringing in those sad faded, bent and generally damaged photos.  They can go back home as soon as they scanned.

Pulling it all together!
Continue working on your photomontage this week.

This is an important week for getting your grades all in order.
If you are missing assignments, turn them in.
If you turn something in, please email me.

Looking ahead...
You need to start looking for a picture or pictures that are damaged.  We are learning photo-restoration next.   This will begin next week.

The Hartman Creek field trip will be in April.

Monday, Monday!

I am at East JH wheel throwing for Mrs. Hansen's class.  I will be back tomorrow.

Review the Photomontage Assignment write-up from Friday.
Create your background first.
Use only pictures that you have taken, and that are on your contact sheet that you handed in.  You will be marking the images that you use and handing in the contact sheets again with your finished composition.
If there is an image that you want....go take it...with your camera!

Great day to catch-up on back assignments:
-Camera Quiz
-Jerry Uelsmann assignment
-Mutant, rubric and back story
-Contact sheets, rubric

Not sure what is missing?  Check skyward!  Don't like your current grade?  Figure out what needs to be done to change it!  Follow through and make it happen!  Email me if there are additions to the N drive folders :)

Progress reports will be created this coming weekend and PTV night is March 12.

Artists for thought...Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte

Hi. Happy Friday

Lets talk about awesome-ness.
What do you find inspiring?

I LOVE PLACEMENT.
The compliments that come from finding the perfect fit.
The way pieces fit together to produce some kind of peace within the viewing.
It can be beyond chaotic but within the constructed chaos we need to be able to find our
attachment...
A place.

Like this photo.
Can we relate?  What do we feel, see, find within this image?
Like this video.
What makes these pieces work?

Photo-montage examples

Find inspiration within your images... if they don't inspire you then take more that DO.

Be sure to turn in a contact with any new images.

Jerry Uelsmann Assignment

Our assignment is to use images from your first shooting assignment and to create a
photographic collage using nothing except images from the actual contact sheet. You
will not be allowed to download or use any images from the Internet or another
person’s creation. The work will be based on selected slides of Jerry Uelsmann from
the class presentation. I would like you to be able to master several important
PhotoShop skills in this project including: layers, filters, Gaussian blur, transparency,
scaling, rotating, distorting, feathering, and proper file preparation.

The first step is to analyze your contact sheet and look at all the items you have to
work with. Many items are not meant to be used as a whole image, just as individual
parts. Also look for an image to be used as a background. Many of you have some
beautiful sunsets or other landscapes to use for this. I recommend some kind of
land/sky or sky/water image that might look good “mirrored”.

Work out some sketches for some compositions. Remember that Uelsmann often
used backgrounds and settings as the base environment in which several symbolic,
often mysterious images, were place into the environment. Sometimes they are
merely placed next to each other, sometimes blended together, often times floating
(and creating realistic shadows). Use the rule of thirds, or other designed planning
system. DO NOT JUST RANDOMLY PLACE OBJECTS ON THE CANVAS! You
should limit the number of large objects in your composition. Many objects could
become small accessories or strange additions to the image. Remember to use
unnatural size differences to create a sense of the surreal to the image.
I have gotten you started with the file preparation and canvas creation.

Remember to constantly be aware of the symbolic or metaphor potential in all subject
matter. Little in art is put into an image without it meaning something or to enhance
the design of the piece (balance, unity, dominance, etc.).
