Students will be studying the Photography of Jerry Uelsmann. I will be showing a video in class of his work. Feel free to check out his work at the link below. Mr. Uelsmann's work is based on combining images to create surrealist photos based on dreams and other communications such as transformation, birth, and tranquility. All of his work is shot with film and completed in a traditional darkroom. He does use the figure(nude) in his work quite often. We will be using photoshop to create our own surrealistic final.
Learning Targets:
- Students will learn/demonstrate smooth blends and transition using Photoshop blend tools.
- Students will learn/demonstrate how to communicate through the visual arts using the rules of composition.
- Students will learn/demonstrate how to use Photoshop tools to develop and later flatten layers.
Assignment:
Students will create 1-3 final images using the style of Jerry Uelsmann to communicate a concept, perception, or dream.
Preparation:
The first decision you will have to make is "What do I want to communicate?" It is hard to make a final artwork and not have an idea of what you want it to look like so I would like you to create 2 to 3 thumb nail sketches and articulate what you want the final work to say. Start with the Photo shooting list images, and developing your ideas on paper. If you need more images, remember to shoot objects on plain black , white or any other color background that creates a contrast between the object and it.
